Centre of North-Rhine Westphalia’s IT economy - ideal conditions for the software and IT industries
With a combined 6,200 students in IT-related courses of study, Dortmund University, University of Applied Sciences Dortmund and IT-Center Dortmund groom the experts and leaders of tomorrow and attract companies from near and far.
Among German universities, the largest computer science college is found at Dortmund University, and the IT-Center Dortmund offers IT hopefuls the quickest path to becoming a certified IT Professional.
DortmundTechnologyPark, which includes DortmundTechnologyCenter and is located adjacent to the campus, is the most successful facility of its kind in Germany and the focal point of North-Rhine Westphalia’s IT economy. More than 225 technology enterprises with approx. 8,500 employees have settled here. The current trend is exemplified by the fact that 100% of the total area of 21.5 hectares has been marketed successfully for the year 2002. The demand for the added grounds of "Weißes Feld" [white field] has been similarly high.
Instrumental in attracting additional eCommerce residents was the opening of the first Electronic Commerce Centre (ECC) in 1999 on the site of Stadtkrone-Ost. Today, this community already boasts approx. 55 resident companies with a combined work force of 1,500 with additional residents scheduled to join in the near future: 5,000 professionals working at Stadtkrone-Ost is no long shot: Two thirds of the areas have already been sold to companies or investors.
By linking the competencies in the fields of eBusiness and logistics, Dortmund is an especially attractive location for companies with distribution-related activities and thus claims a position on the interface of these growth markets.
Linked to the max
Dortmund’s IT community is notable not just for its successful members. A decisive criteria in the appeal of this location is the degree to which Dortmund’s IT companies are linked. The successful organisations providing insightful suggestions to local companies and institutions and serving as platforms for the exchange of experience and information on the challenges posed by the New Economy include:- the mybird.de network, an organisation composed of Dortmund IT companies and distinguished by its numerous services to the IT economy and its customers, and
- the network of ruhr-networker, which aims to promote the establishment of a network linking the IT activities in the Ruhr region as well as to improve the location’s positioning.
