Logistics industry
With its employment numbers growing, Dortmund is a leading hub of the German logistics industry.

This location’s competences are concentrated in trade logistics and eLogistics. Leading companies like
  • Rhenus AG + Co. KG (Douglas, Thalia),
  • DHL Solutions GmbH (Johnson&Johnson) or
  • IKEA Lager und Service GmbH
have built logistics centres in Dortmund with Europe-wide reach over the last years.

Transport hub

Dortmund’s advantage in terms of its whereabouts is its central geographic location in a hub of railroad, street and canal traffic. The largest canal port of Germany, a container canal and Dortmund airport - these are important infrastructural facilities. Located in one of Europe’s largest urban sprawls, the Rhein-Ruhr region, Dortmund is within one hour of 18 million people. In Dortmund alone, the logistics industry is represented by (2004) 23,580 professionals (2003) in 630 enterprises (2003), not counting the approx. 6,860 employees of the logistics centres of the wholesale trade.

Logistics competence centre

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft [German research association] regards the city as "Germany’s logistics competence centre": Aside from logistics consultants and service providers covering all aspects of logistics management and logistics software, Dortmund is home to numerous research institutes and associations of the logistics industry, such as Fraunhofer Institut für Materialfluss und Logistik [Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics]. And in addition to the course of studies logistics, there are several logistics-related at Dortmund University and University of Applied Sciences Dortmund.

Dortmund views logistics as an important industry of the future and promotes it aggressively. Economic Development Dortmund and e-port-dortmund GmbH support eLogistics by means of start-up competitions and a special contingent of space. And with the eLog centre, there even is a state-subsidised consultation facility for eLogistics at DortmundTechnologyPark, with close technical links to eCommerce and eBusiness, which likewise enjoy preferential financial assistance as part of the software and IT economy.
